Do Electric Cars Have Transmissions?

Transmission Cross Section Close-Up

Yes, there is such a thing as an electric car transmission. Montebello drivers have more and more questions about EVs as they become more common. And at Camino Real Chevrolet, we often get asked about EV transmissions. While similar enough in concept to a gas-powered vehicle’s transmission, EV transmissions generally require a lower amount of maintenance in comparison. Although it’s always good to stay on your recommended service schedule, there’s less to worry about when it comes to a transmission and different gears on electric cars. Learn more below as we answer the question, “Do electric cars have transmissions?”

Are There Gears on Electric Cars?

An electric motor can produce near instantaneous torque compared to an internal combustion engine. This means that there’s no need to “rev” an EV’s engine when Los Angeles driving, and Alhambra drivers can expect a single-speed transmission. As soon as you step on the accelerator, electric vehicles are at full power.

Are you still wondering how an electric car transmission works? Here are the steps below after you step on the accelerator:

  1. Electricity travels from the battery to the electric motor once the accelerator is stepped on.
  2. The gearbox spins as the motor spins. The gearbox is what most drivers mean when they mention transmission in an EV.
  3. Your EV will begin to move as the electric motor and gearbox spin. Drivers can expect some electric motors to rotate up to 20,000 rpm. In contrast, most internal combustion engines rotate up to 7,000 rpm.
  4. When an EV is put in reverse, its electric motor essentially spins backward, compared to a standard gas-powered vehicle that features a separate gear in the transmission that allows the vehicle to move in reverse.

How Do You Maintain Electric Car Transmissions?

Many drivers enjoy EVs because they require less maintenance, but maintenance is still required. Not having a traditionally gas-powered combustion engine means oil changes aren’t necessary. But does an electric car transmission need to be maintained? Yes, they do. Depending on your EV, your transmission may have different requirements. And depending on the model, some EVs will require transmission fluid that will need to be changed in intervals. This will vary by model. Our service department can also any questions you may have about maintaining your EV.
