The brake pads in your Chevy are part of the disc braking system. When you step on the brake pedal, the master cylinder amplifies the force, and hydraulic brake fluid transfers it to the brake calipers, which squeeze pads and rotors together. This creates friction and slows your Chevy down.
The brake pads have two main components: a metal backing plate and a high-friction lining. The backing attaches to the calipers, and the lining presses against the rotors. Over time, the brake lining will wear down. As it gets thinner, your brake pedal will become less responsive. Eventually, the metal backing may become exposed. This can damage the rest of your braking system.
If your brake lining becomes too thin, built-in wear indicator tabs will become exposed. These wear indicators will cause your brakes to make a squealing noise, letting you know that you need to have your brake pads replaced immediately.
